St. Louis Attorney Calls for Greater Regulation of Dialysis Clinics

Recent dialysis deaths lead St. Louis lawyer representing the families of those who died as a result of negligent dialysis care to urge for additional regulation of dialysis clinics nationwide.

St. Louis, MO December 4, 2012

The law firm of Onder, Shelton, O'Leary & Peterson, LLC is currently representing dozens of families whom have had a family member die after receiving dialysis treatment.    Dialysis clinics large and small have experienced a variety of failures leading to patient deaths in the last several years.  James Onder, the founding partner of Onder, Shelton, O'Leary & Peterson believes greater oversight could have prevented many of the deaths and injuries experienced by his clients.

On June 27, 2012, the FDA issued a recall of a solution used in dialysis, the Fresenius GranuFlo recall (http://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/Safety/ListofRecalls/ucm309990.htm) took place due to an increased risk of heart attack, stating that GranuFlo "may cause serious adverse health consequences, including death."    Fresenius Medical Care of North America is the largest operator of dialysis clinics in the United States with approximately 1,800 locations and a major manufacturer of dialysis medical products.   Naturalyte Liquid Acid Concentrate and Naturalyte GranuFlo Acid Concentrate are used with a dialysis machine to cleanse the blood of toxic waste materials.  The New York Times reported that Fresenius sent an internal memo in 2011 to health directors and attending physicians warning that GranuFlo could increase the level of bicarbonate in the bloodstream, increasing the risk of heart attack, but did not report this information to the FDA or warn its patients (nytimes.com/2012/06/15/health/fda-investigates-fresenius-for-failure-to-warn-of-risk.html).

The Fresenius dialysis heart attack claims, many of which resulted in death, demonstrate how greater regulation of the dialysis industry could have saved lives.  There are approximately 400,000 people in the United States receiving dialysis treatment.

The Onder Law Firm welcomes inquiries from law firms in regards to handling or working as co-counsel on dialysis death lawsuits.
