Yaz and Yasmin are marketed by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Inc. for prevention of unwanted pregnancy, PMDD and treatment of moderate acne in women who also want birth control. Yaz contains the progestin, drospirenone. Drospirenone has antimineralocorticoid properties and can increase blood potassium levels, known as hyperkalemia. Hyperkalemia may result in potentially serious heart and health problems, as stated in the October 2008 FDA Warning Letter to Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Inc. This letter cited the FDA's serious concerns regarding advertising minimizing the risks associated with taking Yaz and referenced "numerous warnings associated with the use of Yaz including, but not limited to, venous and arterial thrombotic and thromboembolic events (such as myocardial infarction, thromboembolism, stroke), hepatic neoplasia, gallbladder disease, and hypertension". In many cases this only comes to medical attention after serious complications have developed. Most Yaz problems stem from hyperkalemia (as stated in the FDA Warning Letter dated 10/3/2008). Hyperkalemia may cause blood clots, stroke, heart attack, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, and gallbladder disease among others.
